The voluntary organisation Sjöstjärnan was founded in 1909 in order to protect and preserve the unique character of Fiskebäckskil. We own the windmill, the old cottage, and an old construction in the harbour for drying big nets – "vadräcka".
We arrange celebrations for Midsummer (not in 2020 due to the pandemic) and take care of flower plantations in the summer. We arrange swimming lessons for children at the sandy beach. At Christmas we arrange for the big Christmas tree in the central park Mossebacken.

The old cottage (fornstugan) is the oldest building at Fiskebäckskil. It is typical for the local dwellings of the 17th century, and was used continuously until 1919 as a home for one or two families.

The old windmill at Kvarnberget (The Mill Rock) is a landmark for Fiskebäckskil, and it is important to preserve it for the future. Several repairs have been made during the years; in 2002 a big restoration was made. The approved plan for maintenance requires more funds.

Like most other villages on the Swedish West Coast, the history of Fiskebäckskil was closely related to the fluctuation of catches of herring. The good catches occurred during a few decades once every century, and then the village prospered. But when catches became low, many people started shipping with big sailing ships. Today most of the old captains´houses are owned by summer-guests.
